Something so immense should seem heavy. The manta does not.
In Mobula Birostris, the great pectoral fins extend from a diamond-shaped body, their contours traced in ink. Lines and proportions bring order to the drawing, yet the creature they describe seems impossible to hold still.
How can something so large appear to carry so little weight?
We often mistake strength for effort, for the need to push or impose ourselves. Here, it seems to take another form: a presence moving through the water without needing to master it. Somewhere between the measured line and the movement we can only imagine, geometry can no longer tell the whole story.
Follow the outline of its fins once more. Perhaps lightness is not the opposite of strength.
